A service worker’s perspective:

Who doesn’t know that?

Sunday afternoon, wonderful weather, time for a trip!

Restaurants are bustling. The waiters have their hands full, resulting in longer wait times.

At the next table, an older couple develops a sophisticated battle plan in the presence of the waitress ("If you take the sausage platter, I'll order the cheese. Or would you rather have a schnitzel? What do you think?"). The waitress tries to control her impatience. Because, of course, she's already noticed the group of women two tables away.

She's been sitting there for ten minutes and finally wants to order. But first, she needs to go to the table directly next to her, which signaled some time ago that they wanted to pay.

And at the last table in their row, a family with whining children is already waving. Finally, the kitchen bell rings again because the finished food for table 35 needs to be delivered warm to the guests.

At such peak times, ten servers would be needed, but where would they come from? Good staff is hard to come by, and anyway, who would pay for them?

The tedious task of using a pad and pen has already been replaced by practical handheld devices (which resemble a cell phone). From these, orders are sent directly to the drinks counter and kitchen.

With the help of a serving robot, waiting times are shortened or even eliminated, staff are spared, and guests are made happy. (C. Rieger)
